Cheap Memory cards for sale
Memory cards used to be expensive but these days, it's possible to buy cheap memory cards quite easily. At one time, even getting your hands on a measly 1GB memory card would put a dent in your wallet. Fortunately that's no longer the case. Memory cards have come down in price a lot in recent years and now they are becoming bigger and cheaper all the time. Every now and again, there might be a slowdown in the price fall, or prices might even rise due to real world events affecting the supply of memory cards, but by and large, it's now normally well under £1 per GB when buying memory cards -in fact we're not far off hitting the 50p per GB of storage.
Memory cards are used in an increasing number of devices such as cameras, MP3 players, tablets, gaming systems etc.
What is the difference between a standard SD memory card and a Micro SD card
You need to check whether you need a "large" SD memory card or one of the tiny Micro SD cards. Micro SD cards are often sold with an adaptor so they can be used as full sided SD cards (and if not you can buy these very cheaply online) - but check before buying to make sure that your device supports either SD or SDHC (or both). You can normally tell simply by looking at the size of the memory card slot in your device. If the slot is around 5mm long, then you'll be needing a micro SD card.
What is the difference between SD and SDHC memory cards?
SD stands for secure digital high and SDHC stands for secure digital high capacity. As you might expect, therefore, the difference between the two is mainly the amount of memory they can store. SDHC is the more modern of the two and therefore can hold larger amounts of memory. SD cards only go up to 2GB. If you are using an older camera, MP3 player etc. then it might only be compatible with SD cards which will mean that you are limited in terms of the amount of storage you can use. SDHC cards (which can be full sized or micro SDHC) can in theory hold huge amounts of data but the most common at the moment tend to be 16GB and 32GB. They get more expensive at higher capacities - though bigger cards are becoming increasingly available (and ever cheaper).
What does the class of a memory card mean?
Memory cards are not all the same, even if they might look it. They have been made in different speeds - and this is indicated by the class of card. Generally, the higher the class of card, the faster the memory card can transfer data to the device. Therefore if you need something that works quickly (for example, for storing and playing video) then you might want to go for a higher class of card (for example, class 10) even though it might be more expensive than a class 4 card of the same capacity.
